A little history for our WINE CLUB VINO TASTING in Florence, in via del Gomitolo dell'Oro from Via Sant'Antonino to Borgo la Noce.
It is called via del Gomitolo dell'Oro and is in the historic center of Florence, the entrance a little hidden by the stalls near the Mercato Centrale di San Lorenzo . Apart from the name, nothing suggests pomp and wealth, opulence and being an aesthetically refined place.
In the bright days of the Renaissance, a large number of non-gold workshops opened here, they were not goldsmiths, but gold spinners and weavers who produced the raw material with which they embroidered and wove brocades, silks and, mainly, sacred vestments. The Bigordis had their home and shop in this street, specialized in the weaving of silver and gold garlands and therefore called "ghirlandai".
From this family of skilled craftsmen a branch of painters would then descend: starting with Domenico Bigordi known as "il Ghirlandaio" (1449-1494), disciple of Filippo Lippi and author among other things of famous frescoes in the nearby Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, continuing with his brother David (1452-1525), who later specialized in mosaics, and finally with his son Ridolfo (1483-1561), follower of Fra Bartolommeo and Raphael.
